9:00 meet and greet, having a cup of coffee for a wake-up.
Our ride begins with exploring a US Marine helicopter hangar built around 1965, used to be part of Dong Ha combat base. Next stop will be Mine Action Visitor Center - a showroom of Explosive Remnants of War collected in and around Quang Tri province. Continue to see remnants of Dong Ha old train station, bunker and wach tower. Here you see a M48 Patton tank left over from the war. At this old-tower site, Cuban leader Fidel Castro came in 1973 to show his support for Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam (PRG). Next stop is Dong Ha river port - an important port for the transport of supplies from Cua Viet base(Camp Kistler) to Dong Ha combat base and onto many firebases along Highway 9 like Rockpile, Camp Carroll, Ca Lu, Khe Sanh, Lang Vei. Dong Ha port was also used by NVA for transporting supplies from the North to Dong Ha onward to Ho Chi Minh trail to the battlefields in the South. We can have a quick look at Dong Ha market to see what got selling in the morning. Keep pedalling to Quang Tri museum to see some weapons from Vietnam war including Surface to Air Missle (SAM), anti-aircraft artillery, trucks used by NVA and NLF, US tanks and aircrafts, bombs. Dropping by Fidel Castro Park built in 2018 to see why this park was named after him. Under Fidel Castro body statue is his famous quote during his visit to this land in 1973 ''For Vietnam, Cuba is willing to devote her blood". This Park is an embodiment of brotherhood and friendship between Vietnam and Cuba. Our journey will continue with a visit to Highway 9 National Cemetery where almost 11.000 Vietnamese fallen soldiers rest in peace.
The second-to-last stop is Champa water wells located in the north bank of Hieu river (or Bo Dieu river/Cam Lo river as some US Marines may call) to understand about the long history of Quang Tri province that used to be Champa kingdom. Quang Tri province and Thua Thien Hue province became part of Vietnam since 1307 after the wedding of Huyen Tran princess with Champa king Che Man (or Jaya Sinhavarman III) as a dowry. We can cycle to Huyen Tran shrine located in Cam Lo district if you are interested in this story.
After finishing all of the attractions, we will cycle to Palm Garden - an ecopark in Dong Ha where thousands of Palm trees functioning as lungs of the city. These palm trees are a gift of Malaysian people and government to Quang Tri people and government. You'll be indulged into an open air feast of drinks. Forget about daily life stresses to enjoy the time passing by slowly at the Palm Garden before biking back to finishing point at VINA DMZ TRAVEL office, 37 Nguyen Tri Phuong st, Dong Ha city, Quang Tri province.
