Da Nang My Lai massacre private tour (Son My memorial)
Morning pickup at hotel in Da Nang city driving South towards Quang Ngai province. On the way, we will have a photo stop at Statue of Vietnam Mother Hero Nguyen Thi Thu who has 11 sons and grandsons died in Vietnam war. The statue park located near Tam Ky city - the capital city of Quang Nam province. Second stop for the day is Chu Lai airbase - the launching point of My Lai massacre from which the Task Force Barker departed for the killings on 8th March 1968. The time of the massacre is right after the Tet Offensive which turns American public opinion against the Vietnam war and causes many protests inside U.S. The area around Chu Lai also saw the very first engagement between the U.S. Marines and the Vietcong in the battle called Van Tuong, a.k.a. Operation Starlite. On arriving at Son My memorial, we will stroll around the Tu Cung village site to see house ruins, bomb shelters, irrigation ditches, rice paddy fields, ... before visiting the museum where photos and displays of the My Lai massacre are shown. Last activity is a documentary about the return of a G.I. back to Son My village to face the victim of massacre, mr Pham Thanh Cong. It is a sobering moment. You can buy the book Pink Ville written by the survivor of massacre - Mr Pham Thanh Cong who is now the manager of this memorial site. Take some photos at the Son My memorial and the temple dedicated to 504 victims of the incident (more than 300 victims according to US Army) before going to the nearby beach My Khe for some coconut drinks or going back to Quang Ngai city for lunch. After lunch break, drive all the way back to Da Nang (Hoi An). Tour ends.
